Swedish Massage
Swedish is the basic 5 strokes of massage; effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement and vibration used together may provide relief from stiffness, numbness & pain. The main purpose of Swedish massage is to promote relaxation, increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. Other possible benefits include stimulation of circulation, an increase in muscle tone, and a balance of the musculo-skeletal systems. Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load.
Sports Massage
Sports massage is geared toward athletes of every kind, from professionals to weekend joggers. The techniques of sports massage are specific to the athlete’s sport of choice, training schedule, and pre/post event. Each session focuses on areas of the body that are overused and stressed from repetitive and often aggressive movements.
Sports massage goes along with a well-balanced training regimen. It can enhance pre-event preparation and reduce recovery time for maximum performance during training or after an event. Sports massage is specially designed to promote flexibility, reduce fatigue, improve endurance, help prevent injuries and prepares the body and mind for optimal performance.
One of the key benefits of Sports massage therapy compared to other modalities is its ability to target muscle-tendon junctions. A 2010 study in the journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that even a 30-second massage improved hip-flexor range of motion. Another study conducted by Margaret Jones, Ph.D. of the American College of Sports Medicine, demonstrated a notable trend toward decreased muscle soreness in the athletes who received massage either before or after exercise.
Deep Tissue
Deep Tissue massage is aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. Deep tissue uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish, but the pressure and intent will be generally be more intense. It is also a more focused and localized type of massage used to release chronic muscle tension or knots (also known as adhesions). It should never be unbearably painful or leave bruising! Hydration is a must after deep work.
Pain Management NMT
Neuromuscular therapy is a specialized form of deep tissue massage in which static pressure and friction are used to release areas of strain in the muscle. These areas of strain are called tender or trigger points and are the cause of muscular pain symptoms.
Trigger points are areas of hypersensitivity in a muscle caused by overstrain. These are small areas of the muscle in which there is a contracture of muscular tissue (think of a tiny snag in a knit sweater). Blood and nutrients are lacking in that part of the muscle and therefore the muscle spindle is unable to relax. Trigger points cause pain, fatigue and weakness in the muscle. Trigger points also cause a phenomenon called referral pain.
Prenatal
Prenatal massage helps a pregnant woman to relax tense muscles and reduce stress and anxiety associated with pregnancy. It also works to relieve some of the common pain associated with carrying a baby, like low back pain, sciatica, neck and shoulder tension, carpel tunnel and edema. The expanding womb puts a lot of stress on the body of the mother. Lower back pain is very common during pregnancy. A prenatal massage can help to alleviate specific sore spots, tension and pain. However, prenatal massage is not recommended for certain high risk pregnancies. It is recommended to begin massage anytime after the first trimester. Consult your doctor about the risk of massage therapy if you have certain conditions, like risk of pre-term labor or those with clotting disorders.
